Self-Help Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Houses for Returnees

The project, implemented under **Project Reference No. 00/KBL/006/LOG/G.03/ROA**, was carried out in **Charkh and Kharwar Districts of Logar Province with the support of UNHCR/WFP. The project was designed to address the shelter and housing needs of returnee families by supporting the reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged or inadequate houses through a self-help approach. Under the project, a total of **140 shelters were reconstructed or rehabilitated , directly benefiting 140 returnee households . The intervention aimed to provide vulnerable returning families with safer and more adequate living conditions while supporting their reintegration and resettlement within their communities. The self-help approach encouraged beneficiary households to participate directly in the reconstruction and rehabilitation process, promoting community ownership and efficient utilization of available assistance. Project implementation involved beneficiary coordination, shelter-related assistance, organization of reconstruction activities, and monitoring of works to support the completion of housing units for the targeted returnee families. The project was implemented from 25 June 2000 to 24 September 2000 , with a reported value of 91,378 . The intervention contributed to restoring essential household shelter, improving living conditions, and reducing the vulnerability of returnee families who required housing assistance following their return to Logar Province. Overall, the project represented an important shelter recovery and returnee reintegration initiative , combining humanitarian assistance with a participatory self-help reconstruction approach. Through the reconstruction and rehabilitation of 140 shelters for 140 households in Charkh and Kharwar Districts , the project supported the restoration of safe living environments and the longer-term recovery of returnee communities under UNHCR/WFP Project Reference No. 00/KBL/006/LOG/G.03/ROA .
